The incident took place when the handicapped youth slipped into the river and started drowning. The youths accompanying him tried to save him and drowned as well.

Residents of Campbell road, these youths—Bade 17, Raju 15, Tahir 15 and Asif 13 (both brothers), along with their friends Dildar, Nizam, Sheelu and Babu, had gone to for a bath in the river at the Peepe Wala Pul, near Gaughat in Thakurganj area.

Because it was a Sunday, all the youths left their house early. When they reached the riverside, Tahir, whose one legs was affected by polio, entered the river first. Suddenly, he slipped and started drowning. His younger brother Asif went to save him but he too started drowning. Bade and Raju who also went to rescue them were unable to maintain balance inside water and drowned.

Their friends raised an alarm and some local fishermen tried to trace the youths. However, they were unsuccessful. Police was informed and nine divers made an attempt to fish them out. After eight hours of desperate search, the cops gave up. Cops said there was hardly any possibility of the youths having survived.
