400 people evacuated as land cracks widen in parts of Ramban

With cracks widening to dangerous level, authorities have declared as "unsafe" some parts in Ramban district and evacuated over 400 people to safer places, officials said.

With cracks widening to dangerous level, authorities have declared as "unsafe" some parts in Ramban district and evacuated over 400 people to safer places, officials said.

"Over 400 people have been evacuated from Dharam area in Sangaldan. The cracks, which were around three feet wide on Sunday, have now widened up to 3 meters at many places," Deputy Commissioner K B Magotra said.

In Dharam area, over 47 houses and a mosque have been damaged due to landslides and sinking of land since Sunday.

Officials said a part of a hill, where work for laying a railway tunnel in Sangaldan was on, caved in. Army has launched a rescue and rehabilitation operation in the area.

Minister for Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation, Raman Bhalla, along with other leaders and officials, today visited the area to assess the damage. Bhalla said district administration has been directed to assess the loss to provide relief to the affected.

The District Development Commissioner has also been asked to provide Rs 10,000 to the affected under the National Calamity Relief Fund. Bhalla claimed that he has appealed to the Konkan Railway, which is engaged in the tunnel work, to provide assistance of Rs 25 lakh for the affected families and jobs to a member of the each affected family.

The minister also asked the district administration to provide one month free ration to each affected family.
