Forty-one people were killed and 13 injured, some of them seriously, when a bus in which they were travelling plunged into a river in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.
The bus skidded off the road and rolled down into Neeru river near Nalti-Galgandhar at around 0815 hours, police said adding the vehicle was on way from Bhaderwah to Jammu.
Thirty-nine bodies were pulled out from the wrecked bus in the river while two succumbed to injuries in a hospital in Jammu.
Seven of the injured were admitted to Government Medical Hospital in Jammu, police said adding the remaining six were hospitalised in Doda.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed grief over the accident and directed concerned authorities to provide best medical treatment to the injured.
Abdullah also announced financial relief of Rs 25,000 to each bereaved family and Rs 5,000 to the each injured.
PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and party president Mehbooba Mufti also condoled the death of commuters in the bus tragedy.
Senior BJP leader Chaman Lal Gupta demanded a probe into the mishap.
