Fortyfive persons, who underwent a cataract operation at a private hospital in Perambalur, have complained of loss of vision after being administered 'contaminated' eye drops, officials said.
Relatives of those affected picketed the hospital yesterday demanding immediate treatment and compensation for the affected.
Patients from different villages in Rishivandiyam taluk in Villupuram district underwent the cataract operation during a camp jointly conducted by the Blindness Prevention Society and the private hospital on July 29.
They had been asked to come for a checkup after 15 days. But they developed eye irritation and pain and complained of loss of vision also. The doctors asked them to use eye drops. But even then the irritation and pain persisted.
Finally, Dr.Ashok, an opthalmologist at the hospital who examined the patients, said they had lost their vision due to some fungal infection caused by the eye drops used by them.
