The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Monday seized 495 kg of Diazepam, a sedative, worth Rs 15 lakh.
On receiving information, the DRI officials first seized 90 kg of the drug from a godown in Vashi and then 104.5 kg from a factory called Sharda Chem in Badlapur.
They have arrested a person called Mothilala and the factory owner Narayan Patel.
From the interrogation of the two, the DRI officials arrested Bipin Parekh an Andheri-based agent dealing in the drug.
They also found that the alleged accused had sent 300 kg Diazepam to Andhra Pradesh through various transport modes. The entire consignment was called back. Mothilal had come from Andhra Pradesh to organise the transportation of the drug.
The drug is used for treating anxiety and insomnia but falls under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act if used illegally.
It is used for spiking toddy and country liquor and its overuse can lead to drug abuse and addiction.
DRI officials said Diazepam has a huge demand in Andhra Pradesh.
In May, the DRI, Central Excise and Customs in a joint operation had seized 850 kg sedatives Alprazolam and Diazepam from various parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka.
