The city police on Sunday arrested five highway vehicle robbers, including two brothers. The accused used to travel in luxury cars having beacon lights atop.

The five accused have been identified as Pankaj Chauhan, his brother Naveen Chauhan, Asif, Ajay Giri and Shadab. The gang was led by Pankaj, a resident of Karhera area in Sahibabad.

They allegedly used to rob vehicles such as cars and trucks on highways and city roads.

"The gang members who travelled in vehicles, with red beacon atop, posed as policemen. They would stop the victims midway and robbed their vehicles at gunpoint. We are trying to correlate their robberies with the various incidents," said senior superintendent of police (SSP) Prashant Kumar.

The five were intercepted by the police on Saturday evening when they were out to execute another robbery in an i-10 car with a red beacon. The police said the gang members fired at the police patrolling team, but were nabbed later. The car has also been seized, the police said.

The gang had allegedly robbed the car from Link Road Industrial Area about a month ago. The police have also recovered three more robbed cars at the accused's instance. The cars (two Honda City and one Maruti Zen) were recovered from the Mohan Nagar Industrial Area.

The police have also recovered .12 and .315 caliber country-made pistols and nine mobile phones from their possession. The police suspect that the phones are also their robbed booty.

"The gang has been operating for a long time. Its mastermind and his brother have at least 11 cases registered against them at Dehradun, Ghaziabad and Gautam Budh Nagar. They had also robbed a petrol pump at Roorkee and targeted trucks on highways," the SSP added.
