india Updated: Aug 26, 2008 18:59 IST

There was no let up in violence in the Jammu region on Tuesday where fresh clashes broke out between police and protesters leaving five injured as tension ran high in the city ahead of Wednesday's massive rally over the shrine land imbroglio.

Hurling stones, protesters fought pitched battles with police who used force to quell violence in Purani Mandi and Parade areas in the heart of Jammu city leaving five hurt, official sources said.

Demanding removal of Governor NN Vohra and police officers who they alleged were responsible for using excessive force against innocent protesters, they also burnt tyres and torched effigies of political leaders.

Police burst teargas shells and resorted to cane-charge to restore calm, the sources said.

Protest rallies were also taken out in other parts of the region including Samba, Udhampur and Reasi as an uneasy calm prevailed in the Jammu city ahead of tomorrow's massive rally dubbed as a show of strength by the Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti, leading the stir over the land controversy.
