Five labourers were shot dead and another seriously injured by suspected Naga militants at Maphou dam area located at the border of Manipur's Ukhrul and Thoubal districts, official sources said in Imphal on Thursday.
Sources said on Wednesday the militants in combat dress gunned down five labourers engaged in the construction of the dam over Thoubal river at Maphou area under Litan police station.
A labourer who was also shot at was in critical condition in a hospital, sources said, adding that the militants escaped under cover of darkness after the attack which took place at around 10 pm.
All the bodies were taken to Regional Institute of Medical Science and Hospital here for postmortem.
Security have been beefed up at Maphou dam area to prevent any untoward incident following the killings.
Several equipment used in the construction of the dam were also damaged by the militants.
Local residents and committees had recently objected to construction of the dam before properly rehabilitating the affected people.
Two weeks ago hundreds of local residents had taken out a procession to protest construction of the dam before properly rehabilitating the affected people. Several persons were injured in police action following the agitation.
