Five members of a family including a pregnant woman and two children were killed and four others injured when their two-storey house in village Kuri under Kharkhauda block collapsed due to heavy rain on Sunday morning, police said.
The condition of the house owner, Narendra Singh, was critical, they added.
The incident occurred in the wee hours of Sunday. Hearing the loud sound of house collapse, neighbours rushed to the spot and started a rescue operation to save the lives of trapped family members. They also informed Kharkhauda police and cops rushed to the spot to join villagers in the rescue work.
Narendra’s pregnant wife Rajni, son Mayan, 4, daughter, 2, his father and another family member died in the mishap while Narendra and three other people sustained severe injuries. They were admitted to a hospital in Meerut.
“Five members of the family died and four others were injured and the condition of house owner Narendra is critical,” said Piyush Dixit, SHO, Kharkhauda police station. The villagers have demanded compensation for the family and free treatment of the injured members from the government.
