Five members of a family were killed when a diesel multiple unit(DMU) rammed into their Scorpio at an unmanned level crossing near Pajjian village near Kapurthala on the Jalandhar-Ferozepur section on Saturday morning.
The victims were identified as Sarabjit Kaur, 45, her son Tirath, 22, Bhajan Kaur, 60, Zora Singh, 12 and Manjit Kaur, 27. Surjit Singh and his daughter, Amandeep Kaur, were seriously injured and rushed to a private hospital in Jalandhar.
SHO Lakhwinder Singh said that all victims belonged to Bhanolanga village and were going to Ibban near Jalandhar to attend a 'bhog' ceremony of a relative when the accident occurred near Kol Talwandi level crossing due to the alleged negligence of the Scorpio driver.
Kapurthala station superintendent Ashok Kumar said the DMU was going to Ferozepur from Jalandhar and it had crossed the Kapurthala station at 9.45 am. The accident occurred soon after it left Hussainpur station.
The Kapurthala-Sultanpur Lodhi section remained blocked for two hours due to the accident but traffic was unaffected as there was no train scheduled on the line during the period. The train was eventually taken back to Hussainpur station. Railway officials from Jalandhar and Ferozepur reached the accident site to inquire into the accident. Police registered a case.
