A five-and-a-half-year-old LKG student is the fourth child to be killed by his school bus in a fortnight in Tamil Nadu.
On Tuesday afternoon, Akash returned home at Pudunagar in Kancheepuram district as usual. He got down from the van. But even before he could move away, the driver of the maxi cab started to take a U-turn. Hit, Akash was rushed to hospital that sent him home after giving him first aid.
Later at night, Akash complained of pain to his father Vincent Ramaswamy, who then rushed him to the same private hospital, which now said he was critical and referred him to the government general hospital in Sriperumbudur.
There, Akash was declared dead on arrival. Ramaswamy 46, a tailor and his wife Valarmathi are in a state of shock. Police, meanwhile, arrested the driver.
After CM J Jayalalithaa pulled up the transport department, the department cracked the whip on vehicles used to ferry school children. This led to protests by private van owners who stayed off the roads on Wednesday. As a result, many students could not attend school on Wednesday.
