52-year-old man dies in police custody in Delhi

A 52-year-old man, accused in several cases of murder and extortion, on Friday died in custody in an east Delhi locality after which two police personnel were suspended.
Inder Bengali, who was arrested by Mayur Vihar police on Thursday night for possession of illegal weapons, died at the Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital where he was rushed on Friday morning after he was found unconscious in the lock-up room.
He is a resident of Trilokpuri in east Delhi.
Police claim that he had developed breathing problem late in the night and lost consciousness, but his family members alleged that he died after he was beaten up the police in custody.
A sub-divisional magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident and two policemen — head constable Sushil Kumar and constable Bhoop Singh – have been suspended for negligence of duty, police said.
Bengali is an accused in 26 cases of rape, murder and extortion, police said, but his family claimed that he was not involved in any criminal case in the last four years.
They also alleged that the police refused to show them his body after post-mortem.
