A 59-year-old man from Badlapur cut off the hands of his friend after inviting him for dinner to his house last week.
Inspector Dilip Pawar of Badlapur police station (rural) said Maruti Premare and Ramdas Mengale, 38, used to be friends. Premare worked as a watchman at the Annapurna rice mill while Mengale is unemployed.
A few months ago the two fought bitterly over the matter of some money. A few days ago, Premare came to Mengale and said he wanted to forget their quarrel and be friends again. Premare then invited Mengale home on Friday night for dinner.
As soon as Mengale arrived, however, Premare attacked him, pinned him to the ground, chopped off his hands with a sickle and fled. A terrified and screaming Mengale ran towards the village, where villagers took him to the hospital and informed the police.
The police immediately sent three teams to look for Premare and arrested him. He confessed to the crime and told police that Mengale used to continuously harass him for money. He said every two or three days Mengale used to turn up at his rice mill and demand Rs 10 or 25 for liquor.
Mengale has been shifted to Sion hospital from Central Hospital, Ulhasnagar.
