After battling militants for two decades, the army in Kashmir has decided to wage a war against growing unemployment in the state.

The army is organizing open recruitment rallies across the valley. Hundreds of locals turned up for an army recruitment rally in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Friday. This rally was a part of the army’s ongoing drive to organize recruitment rallies across the valley to channelize youth resource of the state.

Around 6,000 candidates attended the rally, organized in troubled district of Anantnag, 60 km south of Srinagar. The district has witnessed violent protests for three consecutive years, since 2008 in the wake of the Amarnath land row.

The army’s special recruitment drive for youth in once militancy-infested Kashmir valley is being carried at the special instruction of General Officer Commanding of Chinar Corps Atta Hasnain.

"The GOC has given very clear and implicit instructions that youth of this region must get all possible help and assistance for selection into the Army in order to mitigate the unemployment in the Valley," said an army spokesman.

The army is holding similar rallies in other districts too. "These rallies are a step by the Army to ameliorate the conditions of unemployed youth of the Valley," said the spokesman.

The Army, is looking to enroll the best and brightest young men from Jammu and Kashmir. "The huge turnout for recruitment suggests that the Army has carved a niche for itself in the hearts and minds of Kashmiris. The youth has realized the importance of the Army and are exhibiting keen desire to join the Army," he said.

The army’s Anantnag rally for open recruitment is on from March 12 till March 18. According to latest official figures, there are 6.5 lakh registered unemployed youth in Jammu and Kashmir.

To combat unemployment, the army will organise recruitment in all the valley districts of Anantnag, Baramulla, Srinagar, Kupwara, Budgam, Pulwama, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kulgam and Shopian till March 18.
