Two flats in a building in Ulhasnagar collapsed on to a third, killing six children and injuring two adults on Tuesday evening. The incident took place at Sheesh Mahal building on New Telephone Exchange Road.

The children — Mahak Kukreja, 4, Sona Manan, 11, Akash Hazare, 5, Ravina Bajaj, 6, Dinesh Khatri, 8 and Honey Kukreja, 3, had gathered at a flat on the third floor of Sheesh Mahal for a programme being held there. The injured are Bhavana Hazare, 23, and Jaywanti Chug, 22.

Around 5.30 pm, a fifth floor flat of the building collapsed on to the fourth floor flat, which then collapsed on to the third floor flat — no 304.

Fire brigades from Ulhasnagar, Kalyan and Ambarnath had to be roped in for rescue efforts. Ashok Rankhamb, commissioner, Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation, said the building was constructed in 1995 and was not on the list of 855 unauthorised buildings.
