A locally made bomb went off at Tala in Kolkata on Monday, critically injuring a six-year-old boy, police said.

Police suspect local criminals hid several bombs under some pipes abandoned by the city’s civic body.

Bhuto Mollah, a child living in a nearby shanty, was playing in the area when he found a ball-like object. It exploded when he started playing with it, police officials said.

The boy sustained serious injuries to his leg and hands and above the eye. He was taken to a nearby state-run hospital and admitted in a critical condition.

Officers from the local police station and a bomb disposal squad rushed to the spot. A search revealed another bomb hidden at the same spot and it was defused.

Investigators said they would examine video from CCTV cameras installed in the area to identify the persons who hid the bombs in the area.
