A 60-year-old Tripura woman was tied to a pole, beaten and her head shaved off for having an “illicit affair”, an instance of social humiliation not uncommon in this part of the country.
Four women and three men were arrested for the incident at a small village in South Tripura, police said on Saturday.
Anjali Bhil, resident of Ujan Chandrapur village, was branded ‘characterless’ on allegations that she had an illicit relationship with a man in the village. She was given several “warnings”, a section of villagers claimed, before a group of people forcefully took her outside her house late on Friday evening and attacked her.
She was let go after her head was shaved and subsequently taken to a local hospital by her neighbours.
On the basis of the complaint, police arrested seven people — identified as Nimai Bhil, Aapan Bhil, Bhagabati Bhil, Mayarani Bhil, Hirubala Bhil, Rukha Bhil —all resident of the same village.
In July this year, a woman was stripped, shaved half off her hair and beaten severely while tied to an electric pole in Southern Tripura.
She too was accused of having an extra-marital affair with a married man and three women were among those who attacked her.
