india Updated: Nov 03, 2006 10:44 IST

THE STAGE IS all set for the third and final round of urban local bodies poll on Friday. Voters in 69 districts will cast their votes to elect 410 nagar panchayat chairmen and 4999 nagar panchayat members.

After receiving report that criminal gangs from Bihar have infiltrated into the bordering district of Uttar Pradesh to create disturbance in the third phase poll, the State Election Commission has alerted district magistrates of all the bordering districts.

Additional election commissioner Vinay Priya Dubey said district magistrates of Chandauli, Ghazipur, Ballia, Deoria, Kushinagar and Maharajganj district have been directed to check the infiltration of anti-social elements from neighbouring Bihar.

State Election Commission has handed over the list of sensitive and hypersensitive booths to the ADG (Law and Order) Padman Singh with directive to deploy the SSB personnels (Central Paramilitary Forces) on the booths.

Meanwhile, the district administration of Gorakhpur has shoot-at-site order in Barhalganj nagar panchayat area. Central Paramilitary Force had been deployed to check the activities of the miscreants during poll. SEC officials informed that 2196 polling centres and 5478 booths had been set up for voters to exercise their franchise. While 738 polling booths had been declared sensitive, 1181 booths came under the hypersensitive category.

While 3015 candidates are contesting for nagar panchayat chairmen posts, 17,171 candidates are in fray for the post of member nagar panchayat.

The SEC has decided to depute two observers in those nagar panchayats that have more than 10 wards. The district magistrates have been directed to get two petromax and two generator sets at all the polling booths.

The SEC has removed the in-charge of Sikandara police station (Kanpur) from election duty and the in-charge of Sidhauli (Sitapur) police station had been also shunted out.
