7-year-old starving for rain Gods!

india Updated: Aug 21, 2006 18:47 IST

A seven-year-old Muslim girl is sitting on fast to appease rain Gods in Junai village in Agra district.

Parveen is sitting on fast from last eight days as the village in Agra has not received rainfall in August. There is acute shortage of drinking water too.
Hindus of the area who think that she is endowed with divine powers and her prayers would bring rainfall are naming her as Goddess or Devi. Her fast has been described as "Tapasaya."
A number of Hindu men and women offer her prasad including fruits, sweets and cash and touch her feet.

They also perform puja, blow shell and ring bells in her praise. The girl decided to go on fast after she heard a Hindu religious story of two sisters who sat on fast and brought rain.

She has become too weak but has not broken her fast although the district administration claimed that it has succeeded in persuading her to break fast.
