An estimated 70 per cent voters today exercised their franchise in the by-election to Bhatgaon Assembly constituency in Chhattisgarh's Sarguja district, officials said.
Around 70 per cent voter turnout was recorded in Bhatgaon, where polling was initially slow but picked up pace as the day progressed, Sarguja Collector and District Election Officer Kamalpreet Singh told PTI.
The exercise was violence-free and no untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the constituency, he said.
People cast their vote at 233 polling stations, of which 37 were declared sensitive as they were located in Naxal-affected areas, Singh said.
The Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) have been kept at Ambikapur district headquarters under heavy security. The counting will take place on October 4.
The by-election was necessitated following the death of sitting BJP legislator Ravishankar Tripathi. The party has fielded his wife Rajni, who is pitted against Umeshwar Sharan Singhdeo of the Congress.
