March 31, turned out to be the day of mad rush at the registry office here as people made a beeline to get their sale deeds registered owing to announcement of 20 percent increase in the registry charges from April 1, 2006.

As many as 700 sale deeds were registered in a single day and the government earned around Rs 500 crore, said the sources close to registry office.

And believe it or not many among those who came a bit late around afternoon had to stand in the queue till 4 am on Saturday.

Earlier, when the day started it was business as usual but the rush started increasing in the afternoon.

By 3 pm, the situation compelled the authorities concerned to distribute numbers to the swelling crowd which included men and women both. Many reportedly stood in the queue for more than 12 hours just to save their money.

However, all this went on at the office inside the Collectorate without an extra security arrangement as nearly every person was carrying lot of money. I was dead scared while returning home around 4.30 this morning because I still had a good amount of money in my pocket said, Pradeep Kumar , a lawyer at the district court.
