A 75-year-old widow was found brutally slashed to death in her sixth-floor flat in Kavita Apartments on Yari Road on Monday night.
The police suspect robbery to be the motive behind the murder, as ornaments worth Rs 65,000 were missing from the body and the house was ransacked.
Taraben Kothari’s body was found by her chartered accountant daughter Dipti when she returned home from work at 8.30 pm.
“There was a deep gash on one side of her neck and a blood-stained kitchen knife was found near the body,” said Senior Inspector Suresh Nalavade of the Versova police station.
Taraben, a widow, lived with her daughter while her two sons lived separately.
Neighbours told Hindustan Times that they had last seen Taraben at 6.30 pm when she invited them over to admire her newly renovated flat. At the time of the incident, there were no residents in the other five flats on the floor.
“I heard crying from their flat and went to see what had happened. I found Dipti sitting near her mother’s body and weeping profusely,” said a neighbour, on condition of anonymity.
When the police learnt that Taraben used to lend money on interest to hawkers, they rounded up all those had borrowed money from her and questioned them.
The workers who were renovating the flat, watchmen of the building and the maid were also questioned.
