Eight members of a marriage party were killed and 28 others hurt when a truck they were travelling in fell into a gorge in Indian Kashmir, police said on Tuesday.

The driver of the truck failed to negotiate a sharp mountain turn, which led to the accident late on Monday, a police spokesman said.

"Before landing at the bottom of the gorge the truck hit many boulders as it rolled down," he said, adding the accident took place in Udhampur district, about 230 kilometers (140 miles) south of the summer capital Srinagar.

The injured were rescued by army troops who rushed in from various surrounding camps. Accidents are common in southern Kashmir as roads run through rugged and steep mountains.
