Supply of water from the Haryana Urban Development Authority's (Huda) only water treatment plant at Basai remained disrupted for the entire day on Tuesday. The cause of the disruption are leakages in the main water canal close to the Mundahera pump station in the Jhajjar district — about 15 km from Basai, located on the outskirts
of Gurgaon. The leakage was reported on Monday.

The leakage in the canal has led to wastage of approximately 70 to 80 cusecs of water coming from Sonipat to Basai through the Mundahera station. The leakage led to the shutting down of all the five motors at Mundahera for more than seven hours and disrupted smooth canal water supply. This, in turn, shut down all motor pumps at the Basai plant.

For more than 12 hours —from 6.30am to 12pm — all the five motor pumps at Basai remained closed and kept HUDA officials on their toes till supply was restored at midnight on Monday.

"Though the leakage did not disrupt water supply in the city, the disruption at the Mundahera station led to sleepless nights on Monday and Tuesday. Now, the situation is under control and water supply from Sonipat is normal," said AK Gupta, superintending engineer (SE-1), HUDA.

Huda administrator Praveen Kumar inspected the Mundahera pump house on Monday morning. Kumar found that the channel was damaged by local farmers who wanted to divert water into their fields for irrigation. He has registered a complaint with the Jhajjar deputy commissioner and superintendent of police.
