An octogenarian, Johra Abdul Masjeet, died after being hit by a bike while trying to cross a road in Bandra on Monday.

Masjeet (80), a Bandra (East) resident, was returning from a physiotherapy session in Bandra (West) when the Yamaha knocked her down. According to the police, the bike also skidded off and the rider, Hardik Das (19), suffered injuries.

The police rushed the duo to Bhabha Hospital in Bandra, where Masjeet was declared brought dead. Das suffered a dislocated shoulder.

The Kherwadi police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving causing death against Das and arrested him shortly after the incident. Das, however, was released on bail.

“I was riding my bike on the second lane from the divider. The woman was on the lane to my left while to my right was a car. Another car approached her from the lane she was on and she suddenly came to my lane. I immediately braked and skidded,” said Das, a resident of Vile Parle.

“My skidding bike hit her and she fell and bumped against a car. I was thrown off the bike and dislocated my shoulder. I took her to Bhabha Hospital where she died,” he added.

“Das’s licence and other papers were all in order when we checked,” said Vijay N. Mestry, senior inspector at Kherwadi police station.
