The second phase of the panchayat polls in J&K saw 82% turnout on Sunday despite the bad weather, the murder of a woman candidate and a poll boycott call by the separatists.
Polling was held at five blocks of the Valley — Uri (Baramulla), Nagam (Badgam), Pahloo (Kulgam), Lar (Ganderbal) and Wavoora (Kupwara) —and three blocks of the Jammu region, Chenani (Udhampur), Vijaypur (Samba) and RS Pura (Jammu).
According to a poll official, Uri recorded 86.95% turnout, Wavoora 85%, Lar 82.60%, Nagam 72% and Pahloo 81.48%.
The turnout was equally impressive in Chenani, 78%, Vijaypur, 84%, and RS Pura, 83%.
Pakharpora in central Badgam -- where the woman candidate was killed and two others pulled out on Friday —recorded over 70% turnout.
Chief minister Omar Abdullah, meanwhile, had a word of admonition for the media. “Will the media now please leave us to have our panchayat elections without crowing about the turnout? We can do without the attention,” he posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.
