Three days after parliamentarian Subramanian Swamy tweeted that the Upper House has approved his authenticated documents on the AgustaWestland issue, deputy chairperson PJ Kurien said the papers were only tabled and have not been approved by him or by chairperson Hamid Ansari.

Jairam Ramesh and other Congress MPs sought clarification from the Chair on Swamy’s claims, Kurien said: “Nobody else has authenticated it. The responsibility of authenticating is of Dr. Subramanian Swamy only. That is the case with every authentication,” Kurien said.

The authentication of the documents had become an issue during the discussion last Wednesday. The Congress wanted to know how Swamy had access to “sensitive” documents that he had quoted from. After Congress’ protests, Kurien asked Swamy to authenticate the documents.

Swamy quoted from three documents that ran into 13 pages during the Rajya Sabha debate on “allegation of bribery and corruption in AgustaWestland Chopper Deal.”

After Kurien clarified that Swamy’s papers have not been approved but only tabled, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh sought an apology from the BJP leader referring to his Twitter post “Rajya Sabha has approved my documents. Jairam Ramesh run for cover.”

“I demand an apology from the honourable member,” Ramesh said. Swamy hit back, “Mr. Jairam Ramesh has the habit of putting his hand in the wrong place and getting hurt. Right now, he is under a bandage because of that!”

He added that his statements on Twitter were between him and his followers. “Jairam Ramesh is follower of some buddhu (fool),” Swamy said.
