It has now been confirmed that Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie was not present in the car when it knocked down a bike rider in Pune.

Her driver, who was driving a Toyota Qualis, was apparently trying to escape the paparazzi, fled from the spot after the accident took place. Pune Police is currently investigating the incident.

The biker, 19-year-old Mittal Rawat, was said to have only suffered minor bruises.

Following the incident, local officials have decided to step up security measures surrounding Jolie and her boyfriend Brad Pitt.

Jolie is in Pune making a movie about Daniel Pearl, the US newspaper journalist who was kidnapped and murdered by terrorists in Pakistan in 2002.

"We have increased the security for Ms Jolie to see that incidents like this do not happen again. We are not taking this incident lightly," the Post Chronicle quoted police officer RS Khaire as saying.

Arti Surendranath of Kailash Picture Company, who is managing the movie's shooting schedule, insisted Jolie was not in the vehicle during the time of the hit-and-run accident.

"It's a small incident which has been blown out of proportion," she said.

Jolie's bodyguard Mickey Brett, has also been earlier reported to have manhandled a British photographer in the city.

Brett had also courted controversy in Namibia too, where he chased school children out of a public beach and threatened a news reporter.

Jolie's security men raised quite a few eyebrows in the country when an Australian photographer was attacked with pepper spray by one of her bodyguards, and two female reporters grabbed and forced to delete Brangelina's pictures.
