A spicy touch to real life

Corporate is about emotional entanglement, says Madhur Bhandarkar.

india Updated: Jul 07, 2006 16:41 IST

Madhur Bhandarkar has come out with Corporate, 18 months after Page 3. Made with a cast of 25 actors, Corporate, is in line with his earlier films like Satta, Chandni Bar and Page 3, says Madhur.

However, he concedes, he is not sure of what the public's response to his film would be. HT City catches up with the National Award-winning director.

After dealing with the deceit that lies beneath the veneer of glamour in Page 3, what made you enter the boardroom?
Every industry has its own secrets and hidden agendas. When I made Page 3 people wondered if it would be successful. Similarly, for Corporate, people wanted to know who would be interested in knowing what goes on behind the closed doors of the boardroom. But, my film is not just about black suits and white collars. It deals with the emotional entanglement between the characters. The idea was to bring the soft side of people who deal with the hard-nosed corporate world.

Corporate follows successful films like Page 3 and Chandini Bar. Does the worry of making a successful film play on your mind?
No. I am an experimental filmmaker and I always follow my instinct. I think about how people will respond to my film only when it is released. My films are works of fiction based on reality.

How important is the entertainment aspect, when you deal with "real-life" issues?
Every film is made with the aim of entertaining the person who has bought the ticket for it. While the film could be dealing with hard facts, it has to be packaged with an adequate dose of drama and spice. There is also the craft of filmmaking, where both the script and its treatment should complement each other.

The music of the film is doing quite well. Were you expecting such a response?
No. It came as a pleasant surprise. In fact, I don't attach much significance to songs and dance.

What is the status of Signal?
Seventy per cent of the film is complete, but right now I am totally concentrating on Corporate.
