You have seen kundan. We all have. But have you seen layered kundan? The jewellery at Curio Cottage’s new outlet in Khar has a touch of the new in traditional designs and a touch of the old in contemporary creations.
So, you get layered kundan ear pieces, set in silver plated with gold, as well as contemporary designs with Victorian motifs and a touch of the antique.
The neck pieces are more contemporary in look and feel than the earrings and finding a set might get a little difficult.
However, with most of the pieces in the store — especially the rings that come in a variety of contemporary floral and ornate designs — being a complete accessory in themselves, you might not want to pair them with something too similar.
A neck piece made of a scarf and stones is especially innovative. Its variant — where the scarf is not twirled but simply draped around the neck — does not quite have the same essence.
“What we have at our outlets in Mumbai is what we are selling in Europe — especially Italy and Spain — as well. So, the designs are very contemporary and not a season old,” said owner Anand Bhatija.
What would perhaps take you by surprise are the belts that have designed buckles, set in stones like smoky topaz, amethyst, garnets and onyx.
All the designs — ear and neck pieces and bracelets — are all made of semi-precious stones, set in either silver or a basic metal.
Prices are of course higher than what you would pay for your average silver trinket, but not inhibitive enough to keep you away.
So if you are looking for something for yourself or to gift someone — we are in midst of the wedding season — you could find just what you need.
Ear pieces would cost you between Rs 1,500 and Rs 4,000 while a statement neck piece could be a tad steep at Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,500.
Bracelets — and you could get a wide range of cuffs here — are tagged between Rs 3,000 and Rs 5,000 while rings cost around Rs 1,000.
