The Shiv Sena-BJP combine has won its first round of battle over the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).
The saffron alliance has managed to bag the crucial dates of the last two days of campaign — October 10-11 at Shivaji Park grounds.
As the election dates were announced last week, both the parties rushed to the civic body office to bag dates for the last two campaigning dates at Shivaji Park.
While MNS sent an important party functionary and activists, BJP and Shiv Sena from Dadar vibhag took the lead.
When the BMC officials asked them to come the next day, Shiv Sena men stayed back at the office in the night so that they did not lose the chance and got it done before MNS men could reach the BMC office.
“We did not want to lose this chance as Shivaji Park is important for the Shiv Sena and no other party can stake a claim there,” a senior party functionary said.
BMC’s Assistant Municipal Commissioner, G (north) ward, Narayan Patil, under whose jurisdiction Shivaji Park falls, confirmed that he had received application from the BJP for the saffron alliance’s rally on October 11.
“We are scrutinising the application and will allot the ground to them after all the procedures are complete,” Patil told HT.
The MNS has to settle for an earlier date of October 9. “Our party will be holding several rallies in various cities and many more in Mumbai. As far as Shivaji Park is considered, we have been given the date of October 9,” MNS spokesperson Nitin Sardesai said.
