Apart from BJP members and supporters, the Aam Aadmi Party too is eagerly awaiting a formal announcement of the saffron party’s chief ministerial candidate for Delhi.

Ever since it became almost clear that Harsh Vardhan will be the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate, the AAP began scouting among its ranks for a suitable candidate to contest the elections from Krishna Nagar. Harsh Vardhan has won four consecutive terms from this constituency.

The probability of Vardhan’s candidature has upset the AAP’s calculations. “We had been concentrating on Model Town, Goel’s constituency. But if Vardhan becomes the BJP’s the CM candidate, we will have to think about a strong candidate to stand up against him,” said a leader.

Initially, sources said, there was a proposal that Arvind Kejriwal should stand up against Vardhan. But Kejriwal had already decided to contest against incumbent chief minister Sheila Dikshit from New Delhi constituency.

“There has been examples in the past that people contest from two constituencies. But if Kejriwal contested from both seats, it would be akin to being disloyal to people from either of the constituencies, which he is against,” sources said.

Apart from Kejriwal, AAP’s other known faces include Manish Sisodia, Prashant Bhushan, Sanjay Singh, Gopal Rai and Kumar Vishwas. Of these, Sisodia and Rai are party’s candidate-designates from Patparganj and Babarpur, respectively.

Given the profile of the constituency and Vishwas’s popularity, his name has been suggested by a member of the national executive.

A poet and a good orator, Vishwas is a known face across Delhi. “But this is just an idea. Kumar’s name has not yet been finalised. We will take a decision only when BJP declares its CM candidate,” the sources added.
