Delhi law minister Somnath Bharti attempted to carry out a raid in South Delhi's Khirki Extension late on Wednesday but ended up having a heated argument with police officials. Bharti claimed he made a surprise visit to the area to expose an active drug and prostitution ring.

The Delhi law minister alleged the racket was flourishing with the help of foreign nationals, mostly Nigerians.

He had a spat with an assistant commissioner of police after which his supporters carried out protests in the locality. The minister later said Malviya Nagar police station officer Vijay Pal, who had arrived at the spot during the commotion, went away without taking any action.

The police alleged that Bharti was forcing them to conduct a search on a building without a warrant, which is prohibited after dar, according to TV reports.

“This is my area, Khirki village. People complained about Nigerians indulging in prostitution and drug supply. The locals are facing trouble because of this,” Bharti said. “We came to the area… and a few girls tried to run away,” he added.

“We called the police. They took a lot of time to come and later refused to raid a building that locals said was suspect. They (the police) did not listen to me,” the minister in the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government said.

A local resident, Badal Khan, said: “The residents complained to the police, but nothing happened. The women were supplying drugs and working as prostitutes. The locals then went to Bharti."
