The crime branch of the Delhi Police arrested an alleged sharpshooter, who was once associated with gangster Abu Salem and made extortion calls to several Bollywood celebrities, on Saturday evening, more than four years after he jumped bail in a murder case.
Jaan Usman alias Reenu was arrested outside the Kashmere Gate inter-state bus terminus and a country-made pistol and three cartridges were recovered from him, police said.
During interrogation, he reportedly confessed that he was one of the assailants who shot at actor-filmmaker Rakesh Roshan at the behest of Salem in 2001. “Usman had fired at the filmmaker after receiving instructions from Abu Salem. He has also been involved in making extorting threats to singer Daler Mehandi,” deputy commissioner of police (crime) DK Gupta said. Usman had also made extortion calls to industrialist Anil Thadani, the husband of actress Raveena Tandon.
He was previously arrested in 2010 in connection with the murder of a businessman in east Delhi.
The crime branch officials in Delhi have informed their Mumbai counterparts of the developments. According to police sources, Usman had been trying to revive his gang for the last few months and had also met some of his former associates who are hiding in various states. He was scheduled to meet a few of them at the bus station. The crime branch has registered a fresh case of arms act against him.
