Like the last two assembly elections CPI(M) veteran VS Achuthanandan (92) has been omitted from the candidates’ list being presented at the party secretariat on Saturday. However, the party is yet to release the list officially.

In his sitting seat in Malampuzha (Palakkad) CITU district leader A Prabhakaran’s name has been suggested. In 2006 and 2011 assembly elections, central leadership had to intervene to ensure a seat to the nonagenarian who often ignored the state unit. This time also three Politburo members are camping in the state to ensure his candidature. Earlier, politburo had taken a decision to field both, VS and senior leader Pinarayi Vijayan, to avoid any embarrassment to the left coalition at crucial juncture.

Now politburo will intimate its decision to field VS and subsequently state committee will have to go by its decision. There were enough speculations that Malampuzha seat will be reserved for VS. But his arch foe, Vijayan, is contesting from Dharmadom in Kannur district and six secretariat members also figure in the list. According to party insiders what really angered many

leaders is the reported condition set by VS. He had demanded an assurance from party general secretary Sitaram Yechury that he wouldn’t be sidelined after elections.
