A 28-year-old married woman died and three sustained injuries when they were attacked with acid by her jilted lover in Morena district, about 465 km north of Bhopal, in the wee hours of Sunday.
Initial investigations have revealed that the accused, Yogendra Singh Tomar, had an affair with the woman.
“Since she was not willing to live with him he attacked her with acid in a fit of rage. A manhunt has been launched to arrest the accused,” said city superintendent of police (CSP) Gajendra Singh Kanwar.
The incident took place when the victim was at her parents’ house in Porsa town in the same district. The accused knocked the door, entered the house and threw acid on her. She sustained serious injuries on the chest. When her cousins and grandmother offered resistance, the accused attacked them with acid too.
They were rushed to the district hospital in Morena where she died in the morning.
The police said, the deceased was married to a man at Ambah town in Morena about 10 years back and had two children. But, when her husband came to know about her affair with Yogendra Singh Tomar, he deserted her about a year back.
After this she started living at her parents’ house in Porsa. Before moving to her parents’ place, she reportedly stayed with Tomar for quite some time and then left for her maternal uncle’s place in Agra. The accused called her up and asked her to come back and resolve the issue. But, the woman chose to go back to her parents, which enraged Tomar.
Acid attacks will be treated as attempt to murder: CM
Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday said that his government would charge the acid attack culprits with attempt to murder and take strict action against them.
“In the event of death of an acid attack victim, Section 302 (murder) of the IPC is normally enforced, but in the case of an acid attack, the government will apply Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC against those involved in such crimes," Chouhan told reporters after giving details about his pre-poll 'Janashirwad Yatra' from Ujjain from Monday.
