A WOMAN and her daughter were injured when acid was thrown at them while they were riding a motorcycle on Airport Road on Monday evening.
According to police, the victim, Gulab, 40, and her 11-year-old daughter were riding the motorcycle on way to market with one Kalyan Singh for buying clothes.
However, near the airport trisection Gulab’s alleged former paramour Jeevan saw her on Kalyan’s motorcycle and chased him. Jeevan, who was also riding a motorcycle, threw acid at them from a bottle and fled.
Gulab received burns in the chest, stomach and back. Her daughter’s left shoulder also got slightly burnt. However, Kalyan, who was driving the motorcycle, escaped the attack with just a few holes in his shirt.
The injured woman and her daughter were rushed to hospital and after treatment were discharged. The Koh-e-Fiza police have registered a case of voluntarily causing hurt under Section 324 of the IPC against the accused Jeevan, who is absconding. Gulab’s husband died eight years ago.
She lives in Halalpura. Police said the victim was friendly with Jeevan in the past but got close to Kalyan lately. The latter was taking them to Bairagarh for buying them clothes before Diwali when they were attacked. Gulab works as ayah in houses.
Early this year, a series of acid attacks occurred in Chowk. The first incident was reported on January 9 followed by similar attacks on women in Kotwali and surrounding areas. Police suspected it as handiwork of someone working at a battery shop or jewellery where acid is easily accessible. The accused in those cases could not be arrested.
