JAN MORCHA chairman and suspended Samajwadi Party (SP) MP from Agra Raj Babbar on Saturday assailed the State Government for sealing the fast food joint McDonald’s, which was part of Atlantis Mall, a multiplex in Allahabad owned by Ajeya Singh, son of former Prime Minister VP Singh. The crackdown came immediately after the Jan Morcha’s suc7cessful Mukti Sangram rally against the Mulayam Singh Yadav-led government here on May 30.

Talking to the Hindustan Times on the phone, Babbar said that the move was politically motivated as the ruling Samajwadi Party was in a state of panic after the rally. The Allahabad Nagar Nigam had sealed the eating joint on June 1 but the High Court ordered its reopening on June 2. The Nagar Nigam officers had taken action on the charges of no parking space for the joint as required under the law.

However, Babbar said that it all resulted from government’s frustration. Asserting that there was no illegality in the construction of the building and proper parking space had been provided, Babbar said that the government had been trying to harass the political rivals. He said that the charges against VP Singh’s family were baseless. Babbar also said that the government had unleashed reign of terror against his family in connection with land purchase in Agra. Four FIRs were filed in this connection, he added. But the High Court had given him relief and issued notices to the government, he added. Ajeya Singh has accused the Allahbad police and civil officials of misbehaving with the customers while sealing the joint. He said no prior notice was issued to McDonald’s before sealing it.

Babbar said that the State Government, which was already in a mess, was  further losing its credibility by such repressive action against political opponents.

He said that the Morcha’s Mukti Sangram against the SP government would continue. Now, the Morcha had planned to hold rallies in tribal areas of Mirzapur from June 11 to 15. Babbar said 11 assembly constituencies in Mirzapur, Sonebhadra and Chandauli would be covered under the programme. He said tribal area had been chosen for Mukti Sangram, as it was facing massive problems.
