SP Udayakumar, who is leading the protests against the Kudankulam nuclear power project, has threatened to sue Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and minister of state in the PMO V Narayanasamy for linking the stir to foreign funding.

“We have not received even a single paisa of foreign funds from anybody,” said Udayakumar, convenor of the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) on Saturday.

In an interview to the Science journal on Thursday, Singh had said he suspected US-based NGOs of stoking anti-nuke protests in India.

Singh’s comment evoked reactions from US and Russian officials. In Guwahati, US Chargé d’Affaires A Peter Burleigh said he would have to find out the “facts” before commenting. In New Delhi, Russian envoy Alexander Kadakin said his country “suspected” this all along.

Fearing the state government may give its nod for commissioning of the plant, PMANE brought its movement to Chennai. It has sought a meeting with chief minister J Jayalalithaa and is planning a Sunday protest programme in the city, including a public rally in the evening.
