In a major detection and recovery of vehicle thefts, the police arrested a Marathi actor and a college student and 12 others and seized 30 vehicles worth Rs 50 lakh.

Actor Surendra Chaudhary (35) and Class 12 student Prashant Shelar (20), who are part of a gang, have been stealing vehicles for nearly a year.

“The Kalyan Crime Branch received a tip-off about Shelar and his accomplice Ravishankar Tiwari. A trap was laid and the duo was arrested on July 21. Chaudhary was arrested the next day,” said Thane Additional Commissioner of Police Prashant Burde.

The police recovered five cars and seven motorcycles from them. Shelar is said to be the mastermind. “They would steal the keys of the vehicles from the servicing centres, make duplicate keys and find out where the vehicle would be parked,” said Burde.

“While Shelar stole vehicles to impress girls with ‘his bikes’, Chaudhary joined as he got the vehicles at a lower price,” he added.
