The Thane police, who are investigating the Alka Punewar case, were told by Punewar, 44, on Wednesday that she and her husband Sanjay, 49, had agreed to separate but she did not want her children to know that she had planned to marry someone else and had hence, planned the elaborate hoax.

Deputy commissioner of police, BB Patil, of the Wagle Estate division, Thane, said, “Alka Punewar and her husband Sanjay had decided to part ways as they were both in relationships with other people.”

Patil said, “When Alka left her house on December 27, Sanjay knew that she was leaving forever, but he had no clue that she was about to stage her own death. He was shocked to hear that her car had been found in the valley.” Alka told police that she wanted her two sons and daughter to believe she was dead so that she could start life anew with her boyfriend Alok Paliwal.

Police also said that Alka had also planned to transform herself into a whole new person. Police said that Alka posed as one Nikita Mishra before Paliwal’s parents, telling them she had badly injured her face in an accident, in which her own parents had died. As Paliwal’s father is a surgeon, she wanted him to conduct plastic surgery on her.

Four officials from Thane brought Alka and Paliwal back from Chennai on Wednesday evening.
