The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will move Bombay high court demanding slapping of criminal charges on Congress and Nationalist Congress Party leaders whom the state cabinet absolved of blame in the Adarsh scam.

Party chief spokesperson Madhav Bhandari will file a petition in this regard on January 8.

State BJP president Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said ex-chief ministers – late Vilasrao Deshmukh, Sushilkumar Shinde, Ashok Chavan and Shivajirao Patil-Nilangekar — had taken decisions for wrongful losses (to the state) and personal gains.

The BJP also wants similar charges pressed against two NCP ministers, Sunil Tatkare and Rajesh Tope, who according to the cabinet did not have powers to take decisions.

The cabinet, however, pressed for charges against bureaucrats named in the Adarsh scam probe report.

“The action of all these leaders amounts to a criminal action. We will urge the high court for ordering criminal proceedings against them,” said Fadnavis.

Chief minister Prithiraj Chavan had said last Thursday that no leader named in the JA Patil Commission report on the housing society scam was responsible for any criminal conduct and hence the state would not file any complaint with the police against them.

The CM had said the NCP ministers, who then held junior posts, did not deal with the Adarsh files.

After initially rejecting the Adrash probe report, the Maharashtra government had on January 2 partially accepted it following Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s opinion that the decision should be reconsidered.
