The adivasis of Jalpaiguri district, opposed to the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha's demand for inclusion of Dooars and Terrai region in their proposed Gorkhaland state, on Saturday threatened 'non-cooperation' during the upcoming Lok Sabha elections if their four-point demands were not met by the state government.
"We had submitted a memorandum to the district magistrate on February 24, but no action has so far been taken by the government to address our demands," Chand Barla, president of the co-ordination committee of the Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Bikas Parishad said.
The decision for non-cooperation was taken at a meeting held on Friday.
Asked what did he mean by 'non-cooperation', Barla only said, "We will not indulge in violence, nor ask people to boycott the polling."
He said the adivasis would hold a three-day motorcycle rally from March 14 in the district.
Their demands are possession of closed tea gardens by the government, issuance of land rights to tribals, delimitation of Assembly seats according to tribal population and passing of the proposed National Highway through the Terrai-Dooars region.
