Adopt social model of disability, govt urged

Madan Lal Sharma, member of Parliament from Jammu-Poonch constituency, has asked the state government to adopt a social model of disability, which should be totally inclusive and disabled-friendly.

He was speaking on the occasion of distribution and fitment camp of artificial limbs, polio calipers and tricycles at JRC Home for Handicapped, Udheywalla, Jammu. The camp was organised by State Trading Corporation of India in collaboration with Bhagwan Mahavir Viklang Sahayata Samiti.

Sharma said there should be full and effective participation and inclusion of disabled people in society and there should be respect for difference, acceptance of differently-abled people as a part of human diversity and humanity.

He called for inclusive education system, transport facilities, banks, etc., for ensuring equality of opportunity and accessibility to disabled people. The MP appealed to the government and NGOs to come forward and contribute in developing an inclusive atmosphere where every disabled people can live with full dignity and honour.

Sharma asked the organisers to hold similar camps in border belts of Samba, Jammu, Rajouri and Poonch districts where many handicapped people are living and required such support.

He also met people and children, to whom artificial limbs were given, and assured them full support in restoration their rights.

On the occasion, the MP announced `5 lakh for upgrade of physiotherapy unit of JRC Home for Handicapped.
