The Supreme Court on Thursday declined to review its 2002 judgement permitting a trial against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader LK Advani and seven others in the Babri Masjid demolition case to proceed in a Rae Bareli court.

A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan and Justices GP Mathur and RV Raveendran dismissed the petition filed by Aslam Bhure seeking review of the Nov 29, 2002 judgment.

The bench held that was no error in the 2002 judgment warranting interference.

Besides Advani, the other accused in the case are Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti, and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leaders Ashok Singhal, Giriraj Kishore, Vishnu Hari Dalmia, Vinay Katiyar and Sadhvi Rithambara.

A Hindu mob razed the 16th century mosque in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992.
