Advocate Santosh Gaikar thought he had come up with the perfect plan – get his client murdered, claim his money, and blame the village sarpanch for the crime.

The Kalyan crime branch arrested the 32-year-old, his brother, Kiran, 26, and two others on January 23 for allegedly killing a 60-year-old man at Davdi village in Kalyan.

“Santosh and his brother had conspired to kill Baburao Patil and to implicate the village sarpanch, Jalinder Patil, in the murder,” SPS Yadav, Thane police commissioner

“Also, since Santosh held Baburao’s power of attorney, he thought he would get the money that the latter was entitled to after the sale of a land. He hired two men – Shailendra Yadav, 24, and Surendra Thakur, 25 – from Kalyan and Bhiwandi to kill the victim.”

According to the police, Baburao and Santosh illegally sold the land of a deceased person. Jalinder and other villagers then filed a petition in the high court against them.

Baburao recently sold his own land and had received Rs 5 lakh as advance. However, Jalinder objected when the new owner started to build a wall around and demanded a land survey.

Irked by the complaint against him, Santosh saw an opportunity to get both Baburao and Jalinder out of his way and get the remaining money from the sale of the land.

He told Baburao to file a police complaint against the sarpanch saying that he feared for his life. On January 20, Yadav and Thakur duo went to Baburao’s house and shot him.

“Gaikar thought Jalinder would be blamed. But our officers came to know about the brothers’ involvement and arrested them,” said SPS Yadav.
