Property prices have shot through the roof in Gurgaon, making it difficult for a person belonging to low-income group to own a house in the city.

The Haryana government has given shape to a housing policy to provide affordable housing for members of the economically weaker sections.

The government has drafted the policy and uploaded the same on the state government website and invited suggestions from the public. Gurgaon has emerged as the darling of property investors and real estate companies.

According to a state government official, the housing units would be allotted through draw of lots. The cost of the housing units ranges between R12 lakh and R25 lakh.

The government proposes to rope in private developers to construct and market houses. The proposed built-in areas of the flats are 300 sq ft and 645 sq ft.

According to the draft policy, any resident of Haryana who does not own a house/plot in HUDA sector or any privately developed township in the state is eligible to apply for the property.

An official of the town and country planning department admitted that Affordable Housing Policy earlier announced on May 28, 2009 has not been successful in achieving the desired result of providing the masses with low-cost housing options.

“The new policy was proposed for encouraging affordable housing projects which can have some real impact in urban centres of Haryana. The government would relax floor area ratio (FAR) and other norms to make mass housing projects happen,” said an official of the state town and country planning department.
