Taking a cue from his sister, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday launched a Snoopgate attack on Narendra Modi, accusing him of getting the phones of women tapped and using the Gujarat Police to stalk them.

A day after Priyanka Gandhi Vadra attacked the BJP’s PM candidate over the snooping scandal, Rahul told a rally at Hargaon in Sitapur, 100km northwest from here, that women had immense powers in India but there was a need to give them respect, which Modi could not do.

“In Gujarat, Modi gets the phones of women tapped. Modi makes huge promises of giving respect to women. In reality, Modi’s Gujarat government does not respect women, this is the reason it gets their phones tapped,” he said, adding that the Congress was the only party that respected women.

Campaigning in Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s constituency Rae Bareli on Wednesday, Priyanka had, without naming Modi, said leaders who indulge in wrong acts against women should be “thrown out”.

Rahul also targeted the Adani group, saying the company’s turnover had gone up from Rs. 3,000 crore to Rs. 40,000 crore in 10 years with Modi’s help. He accused the Gujarat CM of giving the Adani group land at Rs. 1 per square metre, which the company then sold for Rs. 800 per square metre. He also alleged that nearly 45,000 acres of agricultural land was taken from farmers and given to the group.
