DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi is now preparing to receive his pound of flesh, with 27 of the 39 parliamentary seats in Tamil Nadu under his belt.

Party sources, who refused to be quoted, said the DMK expected at least four cabinet berths this time and perhaps an equal number of minister of state portfolios for its leaders.

Karunanidhi is scheduled to visit Delhi on Monday to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss how many and which portfolios his party colleagues will be given.

A senior party functionary told HT on condition of anonymity, “Last time with 15 seats, we had seven portfolios. This time, the Marans (Kalanidhi and Dayanidhi, sons of Karunanidhi’s nephew Murasoli Maran) are back in favour and Karunanidhi will not leave out those who served the party well in the last two governments either.”

However, while speaking exclusively to HT, Dayanidhi Maran refused to comment on what portfolios the party would seek, but pointed out that the DMK was in a more advantageous position than most other constituents of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA), “as we have never given the Congress any grief”.

Another leader, who did not wish to be named, said M.K. Azhagiri, elder son of Karunanidhi’s second wife, may join the UPA ministry this time as he won with a margin of over 1.6 lakh votes from Madurai.
