“He couldn’t bear the pain”, said Kirti Satoskar (23), with tears in her eyes. Satoskar’s 61-year-old handicap father Sharad, immolated himself on Monday night at his Shivaji Park residence due to his chronic illness from the past few years.
“His legs pained a lot and sometimes he would weep due to the unbearable pain. While in pain he always asked god to take him away from the world because there was nothing much he could do”, added Satoskar.
On Monday morning Sharad had asked Satoskar to remove the kerosene bottle from the storage. “I did not even imagine that he was making such drastic plans of ending his life”, added Satoskar, an office employee at Lower Parel.
According to Vinayak Shinde, a neighbour to Satoskars, “After his wife died two years ago, Sharad began suffering from depression. He was also a diabetic”.
“Whenever I spoke to him, I could make out he was least interested in life. Moreover he was also an alcoholic due to which he was always in his won world”, added Shinde (45).
Sharad, who was handicapped from waist down, owned a telephone booth just below the Kandke building at Shivaji Park where he resided. On Monday night, all the four family members – Darshana (25), Satoskar’s elder sister, Dayanand (24), Satoskar’s elder brother his wife Yogini (20) along with Satoskar were busy filling water when they heard their father shouting and flames inside their house.
“We get water at after 9.00pm and thus, we were all outside the house to fill water. After hearing the shouts we ran towards the house and we immediately poured water that was in the bucket I was holding”, said Yogini adding that they further rushed him the nearby the KEM hospital.
According to the police Sharad suffered with 95 per cent burns. He was declared dead on Tuesday morning.
